PEPPER

She came from the 5 A's, too. But in a roundabout way. A friend who worked there asked us if we could take her because his dogs all seemed to be picking on her. We said bring her over; we would see if she got along with ours. We should have known what trouble she was when the first thing she did was pee on the floor! But our dogs seemed to like her, so we kept her.

It wasn't long before it seemed our dogs were picking on her, too. Then one evening we were going upstairs to go to bed when Pepper jumped out from behind a door and playfully bit one of the other dogs. Now we knew what the story was!

She knew some tricks, we found out. We found out she was a lap dog. Loved to sit on your lap and then sit up facing you. One day, she was doing just that when she just fell over backwards. I mean, she just looked at me and literally fell over backwards. I managed to catch her, but thought she had some kind of disease. We asked the person we got her from, and he said yes, she did that when he had her, too. It must have been a trick she had been taught -- she trusted you enough to just fall.

She got to be blind in her old age. She also loved to sit in the kitchen chairs. So she would start walking around a chair to see if there were any feet. If she bumped into you she would find another chair. When she finally found one with no person's legs, she would back up and leap into the seat. When she was tired of the seat, she would blindly leap off. Remember, she was totally blind. Sometimes it would be OK; other times she would land on one of the other dogs and it would cause some commotion.
